History and Beauty 1

Not only as a subject taught to school children either elementary, junior high and high school, history is also present in all sciences. History is not just about the genealogy of the kings that have to be memorized, but a method to predict the future state. Even any sciences, that  is far from history, such as that genealogy of the king mentioned before, always have their history subject.

All the sciences are using history as a basis for analysis. In economics it is also known economic history that observe the state of the economy in the past to read the state of the economy today. To know the stock price, analysts also see the movement of stock prices in the past months which has become history. In the medical field there is also experts of medical history who dissected the history of the disease in the past to find the causes of infectious diseases today. Architecture as the science of building also has history of architecture that integrates with architectural theory.

History deeply embedded in the human life, either in time dan space dimension. History speaks of the place, the location where an event occurs. History also speaks of the time, when the incident occurred, when it takes place, that is all there in our collective memory. People become amnesia if they forgot their own history. Bung Karno said, "Do not ever leave history". Although the phrase was in his last speech on August 17, 1966 is politically nuance, but these words also apply to every corner of life.

When the news broke that the house of Bung Tomo in Surabaya destroyed, we are angry. The house once a gathering place for fighters against the Dutch in the independence war was demolished for a parking lot of a mall. Angry, because the destruction has damaged the collective memory of a historic house that in term of space has been formed in a unity with the city of Surabaya. In term of time the destruction has distorted the history of Surabaya that was dubbed a hero  city, really ironic.

It is not only the old building shape has historical value, but the entire building materials turn into single historical dimension. That is why when the wooden column in the Jardin du Pavillon Chinois Brussels porous, conservationists did not replace it with a new wooden columns, but the porous column was repaired, cleaned from wood fungi for weeks. In Groot Begijnhof Leuven the pitching wall and nearly collapse, was not replaced with new wall, but rather injected  in order to survive as an old wall that has historical value. The old wall stood for centuries was left oblique but potent hundred years. Preserving old buildings is closely related to the science of building materials. Unfortunately, this science is not developed in Indonesia, so if there is a window of old building was porous, soon replaced with new one.

In the dimension of space and time is also formed a group which is often called by the beauty. However how is the relationship between history and beauty? Very philosophical and very deep meaning and thus more suited for dissertation in philosophy. Is it true that historic buildings beautiful? What beauty of historic buildings? If they are beautiful, why Daendels destroyed old Batavia and built a new one?

Old buildings in canal tiger, a large church in the plaza the town hall which is now the Jakarta History Museum, and even a castle, was destroyed because the city was not healthy. Daendels wanted to build a healthy New Batavia, and certainly more beautiful than old Batavia. Is the new building is more beautiful than the old one? As of today many people judge malls in Jakarta more beautiful than the old historic town. If the area around the Maritime Museum was designed and transformed into a conservation area would it be more beautiful and slurp visitors?
